But it also definitely has its issues, and I’m not sure how to form my own community there. I do think there are a lot of good things about Bluesky, the relief from posting to a massive audience and going back to a small one, the deletion of bigots and the lack of reply guys. Ultimately, I think Twitter would have to quite literally cease to exist for one of these clones to replace it, even a Dorsey-adjacent one. The site has ballooned to tens of thousands of users, hence the invite slowdown, and nine people are having a tough time keeping up with the workload. Despite the support of Dorsey here, this site is run by quite literally, like nine people, which has created huge technical problems (there is something called a “hellthread” that if you reply to it, you will get stuck in an endless stream of notifications like a non bcc’ed email chain).
It's Understaffed and Overpopulated – This is not Meta rolling out a big Twitter competitor. I am deeply skeptical of anything having to do with web3 and I have yet to actually hear what the benefits are to building this new platform on that framework. They had to scramble to even get a block button online.
The site is “decentralized,” but I haven’t really seen any actual benefits to that only that it seems much harder than usual to add extremely basic features. It's Held Together By web3 Duct Tape – One concern I have about the site is just how much its founders, including Dorsey, and CEO appear to be deep down the web3 rabbit hole. It’s just a tad bit…cliquey, and as someone who showed up to keep posting random thoughts and video game things, I don’t really feel like I have a place there. They get together to dunk on people who have showed up they don’t like (Matt Yglesias is getting toasted over there) and it feels like they’re celebrating being kings and queens of their own private island.

It's Bit of a Cool Kids Club – While yes, there are a good number of celebrities who have gotten invites and made profiles there, the majority of people I see posting are “Twitter celebrities” who I recognize from over there, and your feed is constantly full of their replies to one another. To be clear, I am not complaining about the nudity, just making an observation, as it keeps showing up on the “What’s Hot” section of the site, taking that identifier quite literally. You can filter those out through settings if you want. There’s A Lot of Nudity – Did I just say thirst traps? Yeah, a pretty common practice on Bluesky right now is to post sexy photos or sometimes outright full nudity, with users seemingly liberated by a low number of followers and an insulated community. But I do wonder if that kind of moderation is sustainable at scale. And more generally, you can post anything from thirst traps to console war opinions and you will not have a million people harassing you in the replies or quote tweets. One of the big “stories” on Bluesky the past day or so was a transphobe who seemed to get immediately booted by the CEO herself, which everyone was celebrating. It reminds me of that old story about the Nazi who gets kicked out of a bar, with the bartender saying if you don’t kick out the first Nazi, suddenly more come and you’re a Nazi bar. Zero Tolerance For Harassment – One very non-Twitter thing Bluesky is doing is essentially booting out all potential a-holes immediately from the service. Or if it’s worth posting things to a few dozen people if I don’t grow over there. But while it’s relaxing, I do find myself wondering if I want to build up another following on a nearly-identical Twitter clone from scratch. There is something both strange and somewhat comforting to go from 150,000 followers to under 50, and getting one like on a “skeet” (what users have decided to call tweets there, much to the dismay of the founders). New Game+ - I made the analogy that if you have an existing Twitter following, it feels a bit like a New Game+ mode for Twitter, starting over from level 1, but you retain all the posting knowledge you gained from the previous decade-long playthrough.
